Deepali Jain is Additional Professor in the Department of Pathology at AIIMS New Delhi, and one of the Indian pathologists whose work is cited in the international classification of the tumours she reports. She contributed a chapter to the WHO 2015 Classification of Tumours of the Lung, Pleura, Thymus and Heart — the reference every thoracic pathologist works from.
Her training runs through the institutions this series keeps returning to and then out of the country: pathology at PGIMER Chandigarh, then thoracic and pulmonary pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Mayo Clinic, before returning to AIIMS.
Her research concerns the molecular biology, immune markers and therapeutic targets of lung cancers, thymic tumours and sinonasal cancers — the part of thoracic pathology where the diagnosis now determines which drug a patient receives. She has published more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer awarded her its Mary J. Matthews Pathology/Translational Research Award, and she serves as an official observer of the association's pathology committee. It is an unusual position for a pathologist based in India to hold in a body whose committees are dominated by North American and European centres.
