If Robbins is the international reference, Harsh Mohan's Textbook of Pathology is the book Indian medical students actually carry. Now in its later editions, it has become the standard domestic text for undergraduate pathology in India — written for the curriculum, the examinations and the teaching hours that Indian students actually face.
Born in Ambala in 1953, he took his MBBS at Medical College, Rohtak in 1976 and his MD there in 1980. He has been Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology at Government Medical College, Chandigarh since 1994, and holds fellowships of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, the Indian College of Pathologists and the International Union Against Cancer.
Beyond the main textbook he has written Essential Pathology for Dental Students and Pathology Quick Review and Multiple Choice Questions — a body of work aimed squarely at the problem of teaching a large, examination-driven student population well.
Writing a national textbook is a particular kind of contribution. It does not produce citations in the way original research does, and it rarely earns international recognition. What it does is determine how tens of thousands of doctors first come to understand disease.
