Pranab Dey is Professor in the Department of Cytology and Gynecologic Pathology at PGIMER, Chandigarh, and holds the FRCPath in cytopathology from the Royal College of Pathologists in London. He has written twelve books in cytology and gynaecological pathology — among them Diagnostic Cytology and Basic and Advanced Laboratory Techniques in Histopathology and Cytology — and published more than 450 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
His research has pushed cytology towards measurement. He has worked on DNA flow cytometry, image morphometry and monolayer preparations, alongside the descriptive cytomorphology of a wide range of lesions: an attempt to give a discipline that rests on pattern recognition a set of numbers to argue with.
He appears in the widely cited Stanford ranking of the top two per cent of scientists worldwide by citation impact — a rare placement for a diagnostic cytopathologist, whose output is usually measured in reported cases rather than citations.
The books matter as much as the papers. Diagnostic Cytology was written deliberately in plain language with tables, schematic diagrams and colour illustrations, aimed at trainees rather than at established colleagues — the same instinct for teaching at scale that runs through several careers in this series.
