Sanjay Mukhopadhyay is Director of Pulmonary Pathology at the Cleveland Clinic, and Associate Editor for pulmonary pathology at the American Journal of Clinical Pathology.
In 2018 he was first author on the study that led the US Food and Drug Administration to approve whole-slide imaging for primary diagnosis in surgical pathology — the regulatory threshold that made it possible for an American pathologist to sign out a case from a screen rather than a microscope. Few single papers have altered the practice of a discipline so directly.
His training path is one many Indian pathologists will recognise: medical school in India, pathology residency at AIIMS New Delhi, then a second residency at SUNY Upstate in Syracuse, a pulmonary pathology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, and a return to Syracuse where he reached tenured Associate Professor in 2011 before joining the Cleveland Clinic in 2013.
His diagnostic interests are the granulomatous lung diseases and their infectious mimics, interstitial lung disease, smoking-related lung disease and lung cancer. He has published more than 140 peer-reviewed papers, 51 of them as first author, and is an active voice in the discipline's public conversation as Associate Editor for social media at Modern Pathology.
