Dr. Vinay Kumar

Almost every pathologist trained in the last forty years has read Vinay Kumar. As editor of Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease — the textbook that has defined how the discipline is taught across the English-speaking world and far beyond it — he has shaped the subject less through any single discovery than through the sustained work of deciding what a generation of doctors should understand about disease.

His involvement with the Robbins books spans more than four decades, beginning as a co-author, then co-editor, and finally senior editor. In a recognition rarely extended to anyone, the University of Chicago announced that subsequent editions would carry his name in the title: the book is now Robbins, Cotran & Kumar Pathologic Basis of Disease. Few editors are absorbed into the title of the work they inherited.

Kumar is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pathology at the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine. Alongside the textbooks — he is author or co-author of five — he has published more than a hundred original articles, served on editorial boards including the Journal of Immunology, and completed a term as president of the American Society for Investigative Pathology.

For Indian pathology his career carries a particular weight. He trained in India and rose to lead one of the most prominent pathology departments in the United States, and the book that bears his name sits on the desk of every Indian medical student. The line from an Indian medical education to the standard international reference runs directly through him.
