How pathology training works in Canada

Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology, formerly Anatomical Pathology, is generally a five-year residency. Applications go through CaRMS, but international graduate eligibility is decided provincially and by individual programme streams.

Important: Canadian IMG access is limited and province-dependent. A programme appearing in CaRMS does not mean it accepts every IMG category — check the stream, not just the programme.

What you need

  • Canadian citizenship or permanent residence for many streams
  • physiciansapply.ca credential verification
  • MCCQE Part I
  • NAC examination
  • Provincial eligibility
  • Return-of-service commitment in some streams
