How pathology training works in United Kingdom

The UK uses national specialty recruitment rather than institution-by-institution applications. Histopathology applicants apply centrally for ST1 through Oriel, then rank training regions. You do not apply directly to individual hospitals for an ST1 place.

What you need

  • MBBS, BMBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration at the required stage
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • English language evidence
  • Oriel application within the recruitment window
  • Regional preferences ranked

Training regions

Applicants rank regions during national recruitment rather than applying to individual hospitals.
