How pathology training works

Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology are usually three years each, four when combined. AP/Neuropathology and physician-scientist pathways exist at some institutions. Nearly all applications go through ERAS, and positions are filled by the NRMP Match.

How pathology training works

The UK uses national specialty recruitment rather than institution-by-institution applications. Histopathology applicants apply centrally for ST1 through Oriel, then rank training regions. You do not apply directly to individual hospitals for an ST1 place.

How pathology training works

Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology, formerly Anatomical Pathology, is generally a five-year residency. Applications go through CaRMS, but international graduate eligibility is decided provincially and by individual programme streams.

How pathology training works

Ireland runs Basic Specialist Training followed by Higher Specialist Training. BST in histopathology is two years and hospital-based; HST is four or five years depending on the specialty. RCPI also runs an international BST programme in histopathology.

Germany has no central pathology match. You obtain recognition of your qualification, then an Approbation or permit, join the relevant State Chamber of Physicians, secure employment in a department approved for specialist training, and complete training under that state's regulations.

Sweden has no central match. You obtain a Swedish medical licence from Socialstyrelsen, then apply for an ST (specialisttjänstgöring) post with a regional employer. Non-EU applicants complete the knowledge test, a practical test, a healthcare law course and a clinical practice period first. Language is the binding constraint, not the post.
